20% ethanol blending

In news

India has advanced the target date for achieving 20% ethanol-blending in petrol by five years to 2025

Highlights
  • The world’s third-biggest oil importer looks to cut carbon emissions and reduce reliance on foreign oil.
  • This goal (of 20 per cent ethanol blending) was earlier set at 2030.
  • Ethanol extracted from sugarcane as well as damaged food grains such as wheat and broken rice and agriculture waste is less polluting and its use also provides farmers with an alternate source of income.
  • Currently, about 8.5% ethanol is mixed with petrol as against 1-1.5% in 2014.
  • India is the world’s third-biggest oil importer, relying on foreign suppliers to meet over 85% of its demand.
Significance

Ethanol blending to a large extent will solve the problem of agricultural waste as well as sugar rates plummeting due to excess production, therefore providing security to sugarcane farmers.
