28-foot-tall Nataraja statue installed at Summit venue in Delhi

  • A towering 28-feet-tall statue of 'Nataraja', believed to be the world's tallest, has been installed at Bharat Mandapam, the venue of the upcoming G20 Summit in Delhi.
Nataraja Statue
  • Eighteen people are working on installing the 28-foot-tall Nataraja statue, believed to be the world's largest, at the entrance of the convention hall at Bharat Mandapam. The statue symbolises Lord Shiva as the 'Lord of Dance' and his cosmic power of creation and destruction.
  • The sculpture, weighing 19 tonnes, was crafted by S Devasenathipathy Sthapathy Sons of Swamimalai, Tamil Nadu.
  • Traditional Chola craft was used for the eight-metal statue, which took six months to be crafted by a team of 50 artisans.
  • The statue is made up of eight metals or asthdhatu. Around 82 per cent of copper was used, 15 per cent bronze and 3 per cent lead is also present. Also, small amounts of gold, silver, tin and mercury were also utilised
  • The statue was made using the ancient lost-wax technique of casting and clay sourced from the stretch of river Cauvery that flows through Swamimalai.
  • After drying the shaped clay, heat is applied to melt the wax, which is subsequently replaced with molten bronze.
Significance
  • The Nataraja statue symbolizes Lord Shiva’s dance and is an iconic representation of Tamil culture.
  • Chola bronzes, noted for their beauty and craftsmanship, hold a prestigious place in the art world.
