7th edition of IBSAMAR helds at Port Elizabeth

In News 
  • The seventh edition of maritime exercise IBSAMAR was organized from October 10 to 12 in South Africa.
  • The Indian Navy was represented by INS Tarkash, a Chetak helicopter and the Marine Commando Force (MARCOS).
IBSAMAR 
  • Exercise IBSAMAR is a joint maritime exercise between South Africa, Brazil and India.
  • The inaugural edition of this naval exercise was held in 2008 to converge the democratic values, economic interests and maritime cooperation.
  • In 2016, the fifth edition of the maritime exercise evolved to become a complex trilateral exercise involving the participation of naval vessels, aircraft and special forces from the three countries.
  • The previous edition (IBSAMAR VI) was held off the Simons Town in South Africa in 2018.
  • In 2022, the seventh edition of the naval exercise took place in South Africa from October 10 to 12.
  • The harbour phase of the exercise involved the sharing of best practices regarding damage control, firefighting drills, maritime boarding actions like cross-boarding and Visit, board, search, and seizure (VBSS) targeting adversary vessels, terrorism, piracy and smuggling.
  • The exercise has boosted the maritime security, joint operational training capability, sharing of best practices and interoperability to address common maritime threats.
INS Tarkash 
  • INS Tarkash is a Talwar class guided missile frigate built by Yantar shipyard in Russia’s Kaliningrad.
  • It is a modified version of Krivak III-class frigates.
  • The naval vessel was commissioned into the Western Naval Command on December 27, 2012.
  • Majority of equipment in the ship is Russian-made.
