Aavalanche in Uttarakhand

In news

A glacier broke off at Joshimath in Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district on Sunday, leading to a massive flood in the Dhauli Ganga river and causing large-scale devastation in the upper reaches of the ecologically fragile Himalayas

Snow Avalanches
  • Avalanches can be caused by a variety of factors, including terrain, slope steepness, weather, temperature, and snowpack conditions.
  • An avalanche is a rapid flow of snow down a hill or mountainside. Although avalanches can occur on any slope given the right conditions, certain times of the year and certain locations are naturally more dangerous than others.
  • Wintertime, particularly from December to April, is when most avalanches tend to happen.
  • However, avalanche fatalities have been recorded for every month of the year.
