Alternative Drug Targets in Malarial Parasite

In News

A Swarnajayanti fellow from CSIR – Central Drug Research Institute in Lucknow along with her research group intended to identify proteins that influence the mitochondria of the malarial parasite and target those proteins with drugs.

Malaria

  • Malaria is a detrimental illness caused by Plasmodium parasites which are transmitted by female Anopheles
  • Plasmodium vivax and falciparum are the two prevalent parasite species that lead to malarial infections.
  • The World Malaria Report estimated 241 million cases of malaria in 2020.

Mitochondria

  • Mitochondria can be defined as the cell organelles that act as the powerhouse of the cell by facilitating several biochemical high energy reactions.
  • They have double membranes and consist of several enzymes that are essential for cellular respiration and metabolism of biomolecules.
  • They generate the Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP) which is the energy currency of cells.
  • Mitochondria have their own DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) which is inherited maternally.
