  • Jal Shakti Ministry unveiled a new initiative under Arth Ganga (under Namami Gange Programme)
Arth Ganga 
  • Arth Ganga’ implies a sustainable development model with a focus on economic activities related to Ganga
  • Aim- To promote economic activities along the Ganga River bank
  • As part of this process, farmers will be encouraged to engage in sustainable agriculture practices, including zero budget farming, planting of fruit trees and building plant nurseries on the banks of Ganga.
  • Above practices, along with creation of infrastructure for water sports and development of campsites, cycling and walking tracks etc., would help to tap the ‘hybrid’ tourism potential of the river basin area- for purposes of religious as well as adventure tourism.
  • The income generated from encouraging ecotourism and Ganga wildlife conservation and cruise tourism etc. would help to generate sustainable income streams for cleaning of Ganga.
About Namami Gange Programme
  • It was launched in 2014 with twin objectives of effective abatement of pollution, conservation and rejuvenation of the National River Ganga. (Under Ministry of Jal Shakti and supported by World Bank)
  • National Ganga Council (headed by the PM) is a decision-making body. Implementation is done by the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), and its state counterpart organizations i.e., State Program Management Groups (SPMGs).
  • Funding: centrally-funded, non-lapsable corpus.
  • Main Pillars of NGP: Sewerage Treatment Infrastructure, River-Surface Cleaning, Afforestation, Industrial Effluent Monitoring, River-Front Development, Bio-Diversity, Public Awareness, Ganga Gram.
Ganga River
  • The Ganges is the longest river (2525 Km) and also the largest river in India followed by Godavari (1465 km).
  • States covered: Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand and West Bengal.
  • Ganga is the third largest river in the world by discharge.
  • The mouth of River Ganga forms the world’s largest delta, known as Sunderbans, and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997.
