Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary

  • The forest and wildlife department will develop a second native seeds nursery at the Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary which will be able to produce around six lakh saplings in one go.
Seed Bank project 
  • The project, which started in 2015, is being implemented jointly by the Forest Department and the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS).
  • The nursery at Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary is growing more than 100 species of native grasses, plants, and trees, and provides saplings for plantation by agencies in the city.
  • Endangered native tree species Adusa (Malabar Nut), Barna (Three-leaf Caper), Dhau (Axle Wood Tree), Goya Khair (Sickle Bush), Gangeti (White Crossberry), Guggal (Indian Bdellium) or Gunja (Indian Ash Tree) among others.
Seed bank in India
  • A seed bank is a kind of gene bank that stores seeds of food crops or any rare species of plants.
  • Seed banks protect us against the extinction of plant species due to natural catastrophes, outbreak of diseases and even deliberate non-use for a long time. Seed banks make our diminishing biodiversity available to future generations.
  • Seeds in a seed bank are dried to suitably low moisture content and stored at -18°C or below. The bank also documents the plan’s identity, sampling location, seed quantity, farming systems in which the crop was grown etc.
  • Svalbard Global Seed Vault is a facility on a remote island in the Arctic Ocean and it houses the world’s largest collection of seeds.
  • India’s seed vault is located at Chang La, Ladakh in the Himalayas which stores over 5000 seed accessions (One accession consists of a set of seeds of one species collected from different locations or different populations)
Asola-Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary
  • Asola-Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary covering 32.71 sq. km area on the Southern Delhi Ridge of Aravalli hill range on Delhi-Haryana border lies in Southern Delhi as well as northern parts of Faridabad and Gurugram districts of Haryana state.
  • It is also part of the Sariska-Delhi Wildlife Corridor, which runs from the Sariska Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan to Delhi Ridge.
