Astra Mk-1 Missile

In News 
  • In a major boost to Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’, Ministry of Defence signed a contract with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for supply of ASTRA MK-I Beyond Visual Range (BVR) Air to Air Missile (AAM) and associated equipment for the Indian Air Force & Indian Navy at a cost of Rs 2,971 crore under Buy (Indian-IDDM) category.
About Missile
  • ASTRA MK-I BVR AAM has been Indigenously Designed & Developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
  • The 100-km range Astra Mk-1, developed by the DRDO, was tested for the first time in May 2003.
  • Since then, been test-fired multiple times and integrated with Su-30 MKI fighters.
  • The missile will also be integrated with Tejas Mark-1A and upgraded MiG-29s over the next few years.
  • ASTRA BVRAAM (beyond visual range air-to-air missile) has a range of more than 100 kms with modern guidance and navigation techniques.
  • Apart from this, the missile has midcourse guidance and RF seeker-based terminal guidance to achieve target destruction with pinpoint accuracy.
About BDL
  • Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL), a manufacturer of ammunitions and missile systems, was founded in 1970 in Hyderabad, Telangana, India.
  • It was incorporated as a public sector undertaking under the Defence Ministry on July 16, 1970 .
  • The Defence Research Development Organisation has transferred technology to Bharat Dynamics Limited for the production of these missiles and associated systems.
