Big Japanese honour for Bengaluru ikebana artist

  • Bengaluru resident Shyamala Ganesh, 79, has been chosen for the third highest order bestowed by the Japanese government — The Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays.
Details 
  • The honour is in recognition of her contribution to the spread of Japanese language and culture.
  • Shyamala has been practising and teaching ikebana, the Japanese flower decoration art, for 30 years.
  • She is also the director of the Japanese Language School in Bengaluru, founded in 1984.
  • She was introduced to Japanese culture when she married H Ganesh, a banker fascinated by the country.
  • He mastered Japanese and received a job posting in Japan in 1977.
  • She founded the Bangalore chapter of the Ohara School of ikebana in 1989 and was its president until March 2011.
About Order of Rising Sun 
  • The award is presented by the Emperor of Japan.
  • It was created in 1875.
  • The Japanese government confers decorations twice a year, in spring and autumn.
  • The culture of presenting the award to Non-Japanese recipients began in 1981.
  • Women are presented with the award since 2003.
  • The award can also be presented posthumously.
  • The Order of the Rising Sun is the third highest order, but it is generally the highest order conferred on distinguished citizens.
  • The highest Japanese order is reserved for heads of state or royalty, while the second highest is mostly reserved for politicians.
