Cochin Shipyard Ltd to build India’s first hydrogen fuel cell vessel

In News 
  • The Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) will build the country’s first indigenous hydrogen fuel cell catamaran vessel for the spiritual city of Varanasi.
About the Vessel 
  • The air-conditioned hydrogen fuel cell catamaran vessel will have a seating capacity for 100 passengers.
  • It will be deployed at Varanasi after the test and trials are done in Kochi.
  • The air-conditioned electric hybrid vessels are designed for short-distance commutes in riverine waters.
  • These will have a seating capacity of 50 passengers.
  • The vessels will also provide onboard accommodation for the crew, other than the toilet and washroom facilities for the passengers.
  • The vessels will significantly contribute to the reduction in Pollution levels in the National Waterways.
Significance 
  • The introduction of zero emission hydrogen fuel cell passenger catamaran vessel in Kashi will pave the way for reduction in usage of fossil fuels and thereby reduce emissions in our national waterways.
