  • The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has greeted doctors on Doctors Day and acknowledged their key role in saving lives and making the planet healthier.
Doctor's Day 
  • The National Doctors’ Day is celebrated on July 1 every year to commemorate the birth and the death anniversaries of visionary leader, social reformer and astute clinician Dr.Bidhan Chandra Roy.
  • The second chief minister of West Bengal was also a popular clinician and medical educationist.
  • He was conferred with the Bharat Ratna, the country’s topmost civilian honour, in 1961, a year before his death.
  • The Government Of India has instituted Dr. B.C. Roy National Award in 1973 which was being conferred by the President of India every year.

Historical Background 
  • Dr. BC Roy was born in Patna Bengal Presidency, British India, in 1882.
  • After his return from London, he joined the Independence movement in India and went on to teach medicine at his alma mater, where he eventually became the vice-chancellor.
  • Roy joined the politics in 1925 and served as the second Chief Minister of West Bengal from 1948 to 1962.
