Firefly bird diverter

The Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change, along with the Wildlife Conservation Society, India, has come up with a unique initiative — a “firefly bird diverter” for overhead power lines in areas where Great Indian Bustard (GIB) populations are found in the wild.

Firefly bird diverter
  • The Firefly Bird Diverter is used to protects birds in flight from collisions with MET Towers, Cell Towers,power lines, guy wires, Fence collision, Hazard markers, Electric sub-stations.
  • Birdmark Bird Diverters and FireEye Bird Diverter models combine motion, reflectivity, light emissions that affect avian vision.
Reason for using it
  • Millions of birds and bats are killed each year in collisions with power lines, guy wires, and other thin profile obstructions.
  • Utilities can be subject to large federal fines when protected species are killed.
  • Bird strikes also cause power outages.
  • Bird nests and droppings cause millions of dollars in damage each year to transformers and other electrical equipment.
