  • Giorgia Meloni, head of the nationalist Brothers of Italy party, won the election and is all set to become the first Prime Minister at the head of its most right-wing government since World War II.

  • Meloni is one of the co-founders of Brothers and has led this political party since 2014.
  • She has been the President of the European Conservatives and Reformist Party since 2020.
  • She has opposed abortion, euthanasia and to partnership, marriages and parenting by same-sex couples.
  • She also opposed receiving of non-European migrants and multi-culturalism and has been accused of xenophobia and Islamophobia.
  • She advocated for a naval blockade to prevent migrant boats from leaving North African shores and proposed screening potential asylum seekers in Africa instead of Europe.
  • She supports NATO but favored close ties with Russia before the 2022 Ukrainian crisis.
  • She condemned Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and has pledged to provide military aid to Ukraine.
  • She is a critic of the European Union for its bureaucratic red-tapism. She vowed to put Italy’s national interest first if it clashes with the policies of the European Union.
