Hot test of the scramjet engine was conducted successfully

  • The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully conduced the Hot Test of Scramjet Engine for 11 seconds.
Air breathing Engine
  • An air-breathing engine is an engine that takes in air from its surroundings in order to burn fuel.
  • All practical air breathing engines are internal combustion engines that directly heat the air by burning fuel, with the resultant hot gases used for propulsion via a propulsive nozzle.
  • A continuous stream of air flows through the air-breathing engine. The air is compressed, mixed with fuel, ignited and expelled as the exhaust gas.
  • Thrust produced by a typical air-breathing engine is about eight times greater than its weight.
  • The thrust results from the expulsion of the working gases from the exhaust nozzle.
Scramjet engine
  • A scramjet engine is an improvement over the ramjet engine.
  • India is the fourth country to demonstrate the flight testing of a Scramjet Engine.
  • Thus, it is known as Supersonic Combustion Ramjet or Scramjet.
  • In scramjet engines, the combustion takes place in supersonic airflow.
  • Such engines use oxygen from the atmosphere in the combustion of fuel.
Benefits
  • It results in significant savings in terms of the weight of the oxidizer that does not have to be carried onboard.
  • These savings directly translate to higher payload capacity, and/or extended flight range for the vehicle.
  • Scramjets allow for a certain level of on-demand acceleration and deceleration by regulating the fuel burn rate, enabling improved control.
  • Enhanced level of manoeuvrability of a scramjet-powered hypersonic vehicle adds to the degree of unpredictability of its flight path, making interception much harder than for a ballistic missile.
