Impact Study of Poshan Abhiyaan

  • POSHAN Abhiyaan launched on 8th March 2018 is a multi-ministerial convergence mission with the vision to ensure attainment of malnutrition free India.
  • POSHAN Abhiyaan provides a platform to converge the activities of various stakeholders towards attaining the goal of ‘Suposhit Bharat’.
Major Findings
  •  NITI Aayog was mandated to conduct monitoring and evaluation periodically to assess the progress and impact of the programme.
  • Poshan Abhiyaan has helped to bring a strong focus on improving nutrition outcomes during the first 1,000 days.
  • Poshan Abhiyaan has enabled a nation-wide jan-andolan catalysing nutrition related behaviour change at scale for positive impact on feeding and health care practices.
  • Poshan Abhiyaan demonstrated that the processes for inter-sectoral convergence are effectively operationalized through in place institutional mechanisms at multiple levels.
  • Poshan Abhiyaan showed that technology can be leveraged for real time monitoring of large scale health and nutrition programmes.
Poshan Abhiyan
  • Poshan Abhiyaan, also known as the National Nutrition Mission (NNM), was launched in 2018.
  • The chief objective of the mission is to reduce the level of under-nutrition and also enhance the nutritional status of children in the country.
  • The mission is a multi-ministerial initiative and aims at removing malnutrition from the country by 2022.
  • Poshan Abhiyaan is India’s flagship scheme to improve the nutritional outcomes of adolescents, children, pregnant women and lactating mothers.
  • The mission leverages technology and convergence between various modules and departments.
  • The term ‘Poshan’ in the name of the programme stands for ‘Prime Minister’s Overarching Scheme for Holistic Nutrition.
  • The programme has specific targets for reducing stunting, anaemia, under-nutrition and low birth weight.
  • According to ‘Mission 25 by 2020’, the National Nutrition Mission aims to achieve a reduction in stunting from 38.4% to 25% by 2022.
