IMPHAL, INDIAN NAVY’S THIRD SHIP OF PROJECT 15B

  • Imphal, Indian Navy’s third indigenous stealth destroyer of the Project 15B class, planned to be commissioned later this year, undertook her maiden sea sortie recently.
About Imphal
  • INS Imphal was a guided-missile destroyer and the third ship of the Visakhapatnam class of the Indian Navy.
  • The Kolkata class and the Visakhapatnam class has similar dimension, but the Visakhapatnam class involves some notable changes like an improved version of the acoustic signature reduction system, an infrared signature reduction system, and a flash deck.
  • A revised bridge mast design and layout were incorporated to reduce radar cross-section.
  • A network-centric layout is introduced with, an (APMS) Automatic Power Management System, a (CMS) Combat Management System, and an (SND) Ship Data Network.
  • The class is armed with a 127 mm main gun.
  • The length of this ship is 535 ft or 163 m the beam is 57 ft or 17.4m and the draft of the ship is 21 ft or 6.5 m with 3037 tonnes of weight and displaces 7300 tonnes.
Project 15 B
  • Four Guided missile Destroyers of Project 15B (P 15B) are under construction at M/s Mazagaon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, Mumbai. The contract for construction of these four ships was signed in 2011.
  • These ships are amongst the most technologically advanced Guided Missile Destroyers of the world, with state-of-the-art weapon/sensor package, advanced stealth features and a high degree of automation.
  • These ships are equipped with BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles and long-range Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAM).
