Import of Cheetahs from Abroad

In News

The Government of India is in the process of holding consultation meetings with African countries for bringing cheetahs. 

About the Cheetah: 

  • The cheetah was declared extinct in India in 1952.
  • Currently, there are no cheetahs in any National Park or Wildlife Sanctuary in India.
  • The cheetah is the only large carnivore to have become extinct in Independent India. 
  • The cheetah is one of the oldest of the big cat species, with ancestors that can be traced back more than five million years to the Miocene era.
  • The cheetah is also the world’s fastest land mammal that lives in Africa and Asia.
