India to contest for re-election to ITU

  • India is contesting, for re-election, to the ITU Council, for the term 2023-2026.

About ITU
  • India has been a member of ITU since 1869 and has been continuously participating, actively in the works, and activities of the Union, and has been contributing, to the fullest possible extent, in the growth and development, of Telecom/ICTs, for the benefit of global community.
  • It is a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for many matters related to information and communication technologies.
  • It was established on 17 May 1865 as the International Telegraph Union, making it the oldest UN agency.
  • AIM- At helping connect telegraphic networks between countries, with its mandate consistently broadening with the advent of new communications technologies; it adopted its current name in 1934 to reflect its expanded responsibilities over radio and the telephone.
  • Based in Geneva, Switzerland, the ITU's global membership includes 193 countries and around 900 business, academic institutions, and international and regional organizations.
