Indore tops clean air survey among cities with mn-plus people

  • Union Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Bhupender Yadav recently announced awards under the Swachh Vayu Sarvekshan 2023 (clean air survey) in Bhopal, with Indore in Madhya Pradesh clinching the top rank in the million-plus population cities.
Major Highlight
  • The awards were categorized by city population size based on the 2011 census. In the three to ten lakh population category, Amravati, Maharashtra, secured the top rank.
  • Himachal Pradesh towns Parwanoo and Kala Amb took the lead among cities with under three lakh population, with Angul, Odisha, in third place.
  • Cities were evaluated on various factors related to air quality, with a shift in rankings compared to the previous year.
  • In 2023, cities in Uttar Pradesh, which topped the list in 2022, saw lower rankings, reflecting changing air quality efforts.
  • The 2022 survey found the first three spots in the million-plus cities being secured by cities in Uttar Pradesh — Lucknow on first position, Prayagraj on second position and Varanasi securing third.
  • In the second category, Amravati of Maharashtra has secured the first rank, followed by Moradabad (Uttar Pradesh) and Guntur (Andhra Pradesh).
Swachh Vayu Survekshan
  • The second year of the Swachh Vayu Survekshan, carried out by the ministry based on self-assessments submitted by 130 identified cities under the National Clean Air Programme, saw Agra in Uttar Pradesh securing the second rank, followed by Thane in Maharashtra on the third spot.
  • The awards are announced in three categories of cities — million plus cities, cities with a population between three and ten lakh and cities of under three lakh population — based on the 2011 population census.
  • The assessment was done based on submission of self-assessment report, along with supporting documents, by urban local bodies.
  • The reports and documents were further vetted by respective Air Quality Monitoring Committee, chaired by Principal Secretary, Environment, and further examined and evaluated by CPCB for rankings.
