  • Every year 17th October is observed as International Day for the eradication of Poverty.

  • Theme - ‘Decent Work and Social Protection: Putting dignity in practice for all
  • International Poverty Eradication Day 2023 theme addresses those who live in extreme poverty and work for long hours in dangerous conditions.
  • These people even after working in difficult and unregulated conditions for hours do not earn decent amounts for themselves and to support their families and maintain a livelihood.
  • This year’s theme is a reminder to global platforms, political leaders and policymakers to realise that universal social protection is urgently needed to guarantee income security for everyone especially society’s most vulnerable members.
  • The theme highlights the importance of human dignity and advancement of fundamental human rights and social justice.
History
  • October 17th 1987 was when the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty originated designated for the victims of extreme poverty, violence and hunger.
  • In the honour of these victims, hundred thousands of people gathered at the Trocadero in Paris also where the Universal Declaration of Human Rights was signed in 1948.
Poverty in India
  • Around 21.9% of the population was below the Poverty Line according to theNational Poverty Line in 2011. A poor household means the one with an expenditure level below a specific poverty line.
  • The current poverty line is 1,059.42 Indian Rupees per month in rural areas and 1,286 Indian rupees per month in urban areas.
  • Poverty estimation in India is carried out by NITI Aayog through the calculation of the poverty line based on the data captured by the National Sample Survey Office under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI).
  • Alagh Committee (1979)determined the concept of poverty line based on a minimum daily requirement of 2400 and 2100 calories for an adult in Rural and Urban areas respectively.
  • In India, the poorest regions are invariably the forested areas of the country in states like Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh.
  • At the global level, just five countries—India, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Ethiopia and the Democratic Republic of Congo— account for half of the extreme poor in the world.
