The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) force, which guards the Line of Actual Control (LAC) along the India-China border, commissioned its first two women officers in combat after they completed their training here.
Details
- A total of 53 officers passed out from the ITBP officers’ training academy located in Mussoorie after a parade was held.
- The ITBP started recruiting women combat officers in its cadre from 2016 through an all-India examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
- Before this, it had combat women only in the constabulary ranks.
- Out of the 53 officers, 42 officers are in the general duty combat cadre, while 11 are in the engineering cadre of the force.
- These officers will now be posted across ITBP formations in the country, including along the LAC with China and the anti-Naxal operations theatre in Chhattisgarh.
Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force (ITBPF)
- It is a Central Armed Police Force functioning under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India.
- The ITBPF was raised on 24th October, 1962, and is a border guarding police force specializing in high altitude operations.
- ITBPF is deployed for border guarding duties from Karakoram Pass in Ladakh to Jachep La in Arunachal Pradesh covering 3488 km of the India-China border.
- ITBPF deployments range from 9000 ft to 18700 ft in picturesque and rugged mountain terrain which require a certain degree of toughness.
