  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi will flag off the country’s first water metro service, connecting Kochi’s islands to the mainland.
About Water Metro
  • The main objective of the Kochi Water Metro project is to link ten island communities in Kerala’s city with the mainland, resulting in shorter travel times and more cost-effective transportation.
  • The project boasts a distinct infrastructure and has the capacity to carry over one lakh passengers.
  • During the initial phase of the project, it is expected to transport more than 34,000 passengers. Upon the completion of the metro system, this number is predicted to rise significantly, reaching up to 1.5 lakhs of passengers daily.
  • The Kochi Water Metro is a modern ferry transport project consisting of numerous boats running along 16 routes across Greater Kochi.
  • The boats in the Kochi Water Metro are powered by batteries and require only 10 to 20 minutes to traverse each route.
  • The incorporation of innovative technology enables smooth sailing even in adverse weather conditions.
