Kolkata unveils biodiversity register

In News 
  • Kolkata became the first major metropolitan city in India to prepare a detailed register of biodiversity.
About Biodiversity Register 
  • The People’s Biodiversity Register (PBR), which details flora and fauna forms within the city as well as its land uses and human activities, has been prepared by KMC’s Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC).
  • It was supervised by West Bengal’s biodiversity board with the help of non-profits.
  • Kolkata is definitely the first major metro to prepare a PBR.
  • Chandigarh and Indore are other important cities to have prepared the document.
  • PBR contains comprehensive information on locally available Bio-resources including landscape and demography of a particular area or village.
What is the need ? 
  • The Biological Diversity Act 2002 has made it mandatory for every local self-governing institution in rural and urban areas to constitute Biodiversity Management Committees within their area of jurisdiction.
  • Once constituted, BMC must prepare a PBR in consultation with local people.
