Life On Venus

In news

Venus may have been habitable for close to a billion years.

Previous Study

Previous models suggested that a "faint young sun" (just 70 percent of the luminosity of today's sun) billions of years ago may have allowed Venus to cool down just enough to form clouds on both the daytime and nighttime sides of the planet, sending solar radiation back into space to reduce heat going to the surface.

New Study Findings
  • The planet we once thought of as Earth’s twin, Venus, may never have had any oceans on its surface.
  • The planet’s atmosphere is mainly made up of carbon dioxide and its surface is too hot for liquid water.
  • The new findings come down to a different kind of model used to simulate the early planet's history, which came out with a less life-friendly result than previous work.
  • The planet's ancient climate likely did not host any clouds on the daytime side of Venus, the study concluded.
  • The associated high temperatures meant that any water would have been present in the form of steam, as in a gigantic pressure cooker.
