Lokniti-CSDS’s latest survey

  • More than one in three (36%) Indians between the ages of 15 and 34 believe unemployment is the biggest problem before the country. About one in six (16%) think it is poverty, and 13% think it is inflation.
Major Findings
  • The Lokniti-CSDS report reveals that 36% of Indian youth, aged 15 to 34, view unemployment as the most pressing issue due to concerns about job scarcity and lack of opportunities.
  • This is supported by the increase of 18 percentage points from a similar survey in 2016.
  • The study indicates that 40% of highly educated respondents (graduates and above) perceive unemployment as a significant challenge.
  • This suggests that educated youth are particularly concerned about the mismatch between their qualifications and available job opportunities.
  • The report outlines that nearly 16% of surveyed youth expressed a preference for careers in the health sector, followed by 14% in the education sector, and 10% each in science/technology-related jobs and starting their own businesses.
  • he preference for setting up one’s own business has grown consistently over the years, increasing from 16% in 2007 to 27% in 2023.
  • This suggests a growing interest among youth in pursuing entrepreneurial ventures and self-employment.
  • The report indicates that poverty and price rise emerge as more prominent concerns for youth from lower economic backgrounds.
  • Additionally, 27% of semi-unskilled and skilled workers expressed concerns about unemployment, reflecting their reliance on various job opportunities.
