Maisie's galaxy

In News
  • The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has now revealed Maisie’s Galaxy, one of the earliest known galaxies, which emerged approximately 390 million years after the Big Bang.
Maisie's Galaxy
  • The object — named "Maisie's galaxy" in honor of lead researcher Steven Finkelstein's daughter, who was celebrating her birthday when the object was discovered last year — began emitting light more than 13 billion years ago, or roughly 390 million years after the Big Bang, the team found.
  • It was one of the first distant galaxies identified by JWST.
  • First detected in August 2022 during JWST's debut season of observations, the distant object was presumed to be extremely old based on its brightness and redshift, the degree to which light stretches into redder wavelengths as it crosses the ever-expanding universe.
JWST
  • It is the most powerful infrared telescope launched by NASA. The telescope is the result of an international collaboration between NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Canadian Space Agency.
  • Webb will reveal new and unexpected discoveries, and help humanity understand the origins of the universe and our place in it. The telescope will also study the atmospheres of a wide diversity of exoplanets.
Objectives
  • Search for the galaxies that formed the very beginning after the Big Bang.
  • Determine the evolution of galaxies from their earlier formation until now.
  • Observe the stages of the formation of stars until the formation of planetary systems.
  • Measure the physical and chemical properties of planetary systems and investigate the potential for life in such systems.
