Mandatory gold hallmarking from June 1

In News 
  • The second phase of the mandatory hallmarking of gold jewellery and gold artefacts will come into force from June 1, the Union Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said recently.
  • The second phase will cover 32 new districts under the mandatory hallmarking regime wherein an Assaying and Hallmarking Centres (AHC) has been set up post implementation of the first phase of the mandatory hallmarking order.
Hallmarking of Gold 
  • Hallmarking is the “accurate determination and official recording of the proportionate content of precious metal in precious metal articles.”
  • So, it is like a “guarantee of purity or fineness” of precious metal articles.
  • The Bureau of Indian Standard (BIS) operates a gold and silver hallmarking scheme in India.
