Mars Orbiter craft non-recoverable, Mangalyaan mission over, confirms ISRO

In News 
  • The Indian Space Research Organisation confirmed that the Mars Orbiter craft has lost communication with ground station, it's non-recoverable and the Mangalyaan mission has attained end-of-life.
About MOM 
  • India’s first inter-planetary mission “Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM)” completed five years in Martian orbit in September 2019.
  • Also known as (Mangalyaan), the truly maiden interplanetary mission of ISRO, launched on November 5, 2013, successfully got inserted into Martian orbit on September 24, 2014 in its first attempt.

Achievements 
  • India is the 1st country in the world to achieve Mars Orbit Insertion in the very 1st attempt. The cost of this mission was $ 74 million, it cost less than a famous Hollywood movie named Gravity.
  • MOM is the cheapest Interplanetary Space Mission in the World.
  • It is the 1st Interplanetary Space Mission of India.
  • It is the 1st Indian spacecraft to survive the Van Allen Belt, by crossing it 39 times.

  • Mars has two moons viz. Phobos and Deimos
  • One Martian year is of 687 days
  • Mars gravity is 1/3rd  of Earth
  • One Martian day equals 24 hours 37 minutes
