Nagaland plays national anthem in Assembly

The national anthem was played in the Northeastern state of Nagaland for the first time in February, almost 60 years after it attained statehood

Highlights
  • Nagaland has been ravaged by secessionist violence for decades, the move was historic.
  • The national anthem was played before and after the address of Governor RN Ravi on February 12 when the Budget session of the Assembly began.
  • Ravi is also the interlocutor for peace talks with militant outfits including NSCN (IM).
  • “The national anthem was played before and after the governor’s address on the first day of the session.
  • There is nothing in the Constitution that makes the playing of the national anthem compulsory. 
Background
  • The State of Nagaland was formally inaugurated on December 1st, 1963, as the 16th State of the Indian Union.
  • It is bounded by Assam in the West, Myanmar (Burma) on the east, Arunachal Pradesh and part of Assam on the North and Manipur in the South.
  • The State consists of eleven Administrative Districts, inhabited by 16 major tribes along with other sub-tribes.
  • Each tribe is distinct in character from the other in terms of customs, language and dress.
