National Anti-Leprosy Day

  • In India, Anti Leprosy Day is observed on 30th January every year. 30th January is Mahatma Gandhi's martyrdom day.
  • Theme- Let us make Leprosy a History; Let us fight against leprosy
National Anti- Leprosy Day
  • The country has set a target of eliminating the disease completely by 2027.
  • The set target is three years ahead of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
  • To achieve the target, the allowance to leprosy patients was increased from 8,000 rupees to 12,000 rupees.
  • The allowance shall be used by the patients for their reconstructive surgeries
Leprosy
  • Leprosy is a chronic, progressive bacterial infection caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium leprae. It primarily affects the nerves of the extremities, the skin, the lining of the nose, and the upper respiratory tract. Leprosy is also known as Hansen’s disease.
  • It produces skin ulcers, nerve damage, and muscle weakness. If it isn’t treated, it can cause severe disfigurement and significant disability.
  • It is one of the oldest diseases in recorded history.
  • It is common in many countries, especially those with tropical or subtropical climates including India.
Initiative by the Govt
National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP)
  • It is a Centrally Sponsored Scheme under the umbrella of National Health Mission (NHM).
  • India has achieved the elimination of leprosy as a public health problem i.e., defined as less than 1 case per 10,000 populations, at the National level.
  • The NLEP aims at eliminating leprosy in each of the districts by 2030.
National Strategic Plan & Roadmap for Leprosy (2023-27)
  • The strategy and roadmap will aid in advancing the campaign against leprosy, to stop transmission, by speeding case detection efforts and maintaining a robust surveillance infrastructure.
  • As India is progressing towards leprosy eradication, a need of strong AMR surveillance system is required to gear up the system.
  • These guidelines will provide the technical guidance in developing and sustaining a robust surveillance system for AMR surveillance in leprosy patients.
Nikusth 2.0 Portal
  • Nikusth 2.0 is an integrated portal for leprosy case management under National Leprosy Eradication Programme (NLEP).
  • It will aid in efficient data recording, analyzing and reporting of the data in the form of indicators and a real time dashboard at center, state and district levels.
