  • In his memory, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways celebrates 5 April every year as National Maritime Day.
  • National Maritime Day is dedicated to the pivotal role of maritime trade in the development of the Indian economy and its strategic location in global trade.
  • Theme- ‘Amrit Kaal in Shipping’.
  • The phrase translates to ‘Golden Era in Shipping’ in English and refers to the 25-year period from India’s 75th to 100th year of independence.
  • The theme emphasizes the potential for significant progress and development in the Indian maritime industry during this period, leading to a ‘golden era’ for the sector.
Significance
  • Maritime is one of the efficient, secure, and ecologically method of moving goods from one side of the world to the other.
  • It is a day of thanking the people who spend months at the sea contributing to the majority of India’s trade and commerce activities on a worldwide scale.
  • It is important to maintain a secure navigational channel and routes for the nation's trade and overall growth.
  • An award ceremony is held on India's National Maritime Day during which the Varuna Award is given to few people.
  • The award is a statue of Lord Varuna and a Citation, is the name of this honour.
