  • Digitally capturing the attendance of workers employed under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGREGS) through NMMS has been made universal by the Centre from January 1, 2023.
About NMMS
  • The NMMS App was launched by the Minister of Rural Development on May 21 2021. This app is aimed at bringing more transparency and ensuring proper monitoring of the schemes.
  • It permits taking real-time attendance of workers at Mahatma Gandhi NREGA worksites along with a geo-tagged photograph.
  • The app helps in increasing citizen oversight of the programme.
  • The App is applicable for the Mahatma Gandhi NREGA workers for all the States/ Union Territories.
Bharat Net Project
  • It is a project envisioned by the Government of India to digitally connect all the Gram Panchayats (GPs) and Villages of India.
  • It originally aimed to provide broadband services at 100 Mbps to around 2.5 lakh gram panchayats of the country.
  • It is a highly scalable network infrastructure accessible on a non-discriminatory basis.
  • It is the world’s largest rural connectivity scheme to be connected by the Optical Fibre network.
  • Aim: To provide on-demand, affordable broadband connectivity of 2 Mbps to 20 Mbps for all households of India especially in rural areas.
  • The project is being implemented by Bharat Broadband Network Limited (BBNL) through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV).
  • The entire project is being funded by the Universal Service Obligation Fund (USOF), which was set up for improving telecom services in rural and remote areas of the country.
