About Mount Everest
  • Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world, located in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas. The China–Nepal border runs across its summit point. Its elevation of 8,848.86 m (29,031.69 ft) was most recently established in 2020 by the Chinese and Nepali authorities.
  • Mount Everest is named after George Everest, the former Surveyor General of India. The Tibetan name for the mountain is Chomolungma, which means “Mother Goddess of the World.” The Nepali name for the mountain is Sagarmatha, which means “Peak of Heaven.”
  • Mount Everest was first climbed in 1953 by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. Since then, thousands of people have climbed the mountain, but it is still a dangerous undertaking. The high altitude, extreme cold, and lack of oxygen make it a challenge for even the most experienced climbers.
  • In recent years, there has been concern about the impact of tourism on Mount Everest. The mountain is becoming increasingly crowded, and there is a growing amount of trash left behind by climbers. There have also been a number of accidents and deaths on the mountain, some of which have been attributed to overcrowding.
  • Everest has been climbed more than 11,000 times since it was first scaled by Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay in 1953, with about 320 people dying in the effort.
