Ningaloo Eclipse 2023

In News
  • A solar eclipse known as the ‘Ningaloo Eclipse’, is a combination of two types of solar eclipses set to happen on April 20.
Ningaloo Eclipse
  • This rare event is known as a hybrid solar eclipse because it transitions from being an annular eclipse to a total eclipse in certain regions before becoming an annular eclipse again.
  • An annular eclipse happens when the Moon partially covers the Sun, resulting in a “ring of fire” appearance where a small dark circle is visible on top of the Sun.
  • The Ningaloo Eclipse will go from an annular to a complete eclipse before returning to an annular eclipse. Viewers in India won't be able to see any of the eclipse, total or partial, in any way.
  • The Moon does not completely block out the Sun during an annular eclipse; instead, it appears as a smaller dark disc overlaid on the Sun, giving the latter a "ring of fire" appearance.
  • The Ningaloo Eclipse will only be observable from certain areas along the western coast of Australia.
  • Its name is derived from the Ningaloo coast of Australia.
Total Lunar Eclipse
  • A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon and the Sun are on exact opposite sides of Earth.
  • Although the Moon is in Earth’s shadow, some sunlight reaches the Moon.
  • The sunlight passes through Earth’s atmosphere, which filters out most of the blue light.
  • This makes the Moon appear red to people on Earth.
