No rhinos poached in Assam in 2022 for 1st time in 45 years

In News
  • Assam recorded zero poaching of endangered rhinos, which are known for their horns that fetch big money because of their supposed medicinal value, for the first time in nearly 45 years in 2022.
One Horned Rhino population
  • Assam is home to nearly 2,900 one-horned rhinos, making it the largest habitat for this vulnerable species.
  • According to the State of the Rhinos Report 2022, the total population of one-horned rhinos, found only in India, Nepal, and Bhutan, is 4,012.
  • Poaching has long been a concern in Assam’s national parks and wildlife sanctuaries, with poachers linked to international wildlife parts smuggling gangs responsible for 191 rhino deaths since 2000. In 2014 and 2015, the highest number of poaching incidents occurred, with 17 each year.
About Rhinos
  • Indian Rhinos are brownish-grey in colour and are hairless.
  • They have knobby skin that appears to be armour-plated. A single horn sits on top of their snout, and their upper lip is semi-prehensile.
  • The greater one-horned rhino is identified by a single black horn about 8-25 inches long and a grey-brown hide with skin folds, which gives it an armour-plated appearance.
  • They primarily graze, with a diet consisting almost entirely of grasses as well as leaves, branches of shrubs and trees, fruit, and aquatic plants.
  • The Great one-horned rhino is commonly found in Nepal, Bhutan, Pakistan and in Assam, India.
  • Conservation Status: Greater One-Horned Rhinos (Rhinoceros unicornis): Vulnerable.
