Parvatmala Pariyojana

In News
  • The government is planning to develop more than 250 projects with a ropeway length of over 1,200 km in five years under Parvatmala Pariyojana.
Parvatmala Pariyojana
  • The scheme was launched in Union Budget 2022-23.
  • The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH) will be in charge of ropeway and alternative mobility solution technology development, as well as building, research, and policy in this sector.
  • The scheme will be implemented using a PPP (Public-Private Partnership), which will be a preferable ecologically sustainable alternative to conventional roads in difficult hilly areas.
  • The goal is to improve commuter connectivity and convenience while also promoting tourism.
  • This may also include congested urban regions where conventional mass transit systems are not feasible.
  • The scheme is currently being implemented in Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Manipur, Jammu and Kashmir, and other North-Eastern states.
Significance
  • Because ropeway projects are built in a straight path over hilly terrain, land acquisition costs are reduced.
  • As a result, while having a higher cost of construction per km than roadways, ropeway projects may be more cost-effective than roadways.
  • Ropeways have an advantage over roadway projects due to their aerial form of transportation, as ropeways may be built in a straight line over hilly terrain.
  • Dust emissions are minimal. Material containers can be designed to avoid soiling the environment.
