28 States and Union Territories have so far lifted 5.88 lakh tonnes of foodgrains under the PM Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana (PMGKAY)

Details
  • States and Union Territories have lifted only 19.32 lakh tonne of free foodgrains to distribute among 81 crore PDS beneficiaries under the PMGKAY.
  • It is less than 10 per cent of the total 201 lakh tonne allocation made for five months till November.
PMKGKAY
  • PMGKAY, which was earlier meant for three months, has now been extended till November as part of the Rs 20 lakh crore economic package in response to COVID-19 crisis.
  • Under this scheme, the government is distributing to 81 crore ration card holders about 5kg rice or wheat per beneficiary and one kilo of pulses per family
  • The cost of free foodgrains distribution under the scheme is entirely being borne by the central government.
  • The additional grains given for free under PMGKAY to NFSA beneficiaries is over and above the existing monthly entitlement of 5 kg grains per person.
