Presidency of G20, SCO, UNSC in 2022

  • India assumed the presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on 1st December 2022.
  • On the same day, the country also assumed the presidency of G20.
Focus of India as UNSC President
  • India will focus on two major themes-
  • First will be an all-encompassing theme focused on building a new orientation towards reformed multilateralism,
  • while the second theme will focus on an approach towards global counter-terrorism.
G20 and its Objectives-
  • The G20 or Group of 20 functions as an intergovernmental meeting, where states participate in discussions on different aspects of the global economy.
  • It was formed during the 1990s when Southeast Asian economies were witnessing a financial crisis.
  • It had a tremendous impact in the year 2008, when it helped reduce global panic caused by a restrained economy and restore economic growth.
  • The meeting includes the European Union, and some of the world’s largest economies among other nations. Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, EU, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, UK and USA comprise the G20.
  • These countries, at present, “account for more than 80% of world GDP, 75% of global trade, and 60% of the global population.
