Russia, China extend friendship and cooperation treaty

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping announced the extension of a 20-year-old friendship and cooperation treaty between their countries

Highlights
  • The Sino-Russian Treaty of Friendship, signed in 2001, enshrined the two powers' support for defending national unity and territorial integrity, at a time when both Moscow and Beijing are at odds with Western countries on a wide range of issues.
  • The agreement would be automatically extended for another five years after it expires in February 2022.
  • China and Russia have injected positive energy into the international community through their close cooperation, as the world is entering a period of turbulence and change and human development is confronted with multiple crises.
2001 Sino-Russian Treaty of Friendship
  • The Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation Between the People's Republic of China and the Russian Federation (FCT) is a twenty-year strategic treaty that was signed by the leaders of the two international powers, Jiang Zemin and Vladimir Putin, on July 16, 2001.
  • The treaty outlines the broad strokes which are to serve as a basis for peaceful relations, economic cooperation, as well as diplomatic and geopolitical reliance.
