SAARC needs a terror-free environment

In news

36th Charter Day anniversary of SAARC was recently celebrated.

Highlights
  • PM Modi said SAARC can only be fully effective in the absence of “terror and violence”.
  • Nepal is the current chairman of SAARC, a position which moves by rotation through the eight countries of South Asia — Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
  • It held the last SAARC summit in 2014.
  • In 2016, Pakistan was due to hold the next summit, but it had to be put off after India refused to attend the event in Islamabad, and Nepal continues to hold the chair.
SAARC Charter Day
  • SAARC Charter Day is observed annually on 8th December.
  • This day marks the signing of the SAARC Charter in 1985 by the Leaders of SAARC Countries Heads of State or Government of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka at the First SAARC Summit held in Dhaka.
  • Since the establishment of the Association, the SAARC Secretariat, member states, regional centers and apex/recognized bodies have been commemorating December 8 as the SAARC Charter day and celebrate it with great enthusiasm by organizing events and programs.
