  • The Odisha government, is set to inaugurate an ambitious temple project of its own a Rs 800-crore heritage corridor around Puri’s renowned Jagannath Temple, aimed at improving infrastructure for visiting devotees.
The Parikarma project
  • The Parikrama project includes a 75-metre corridor surrounding the Jagannath temple complex, which, according to the project’s website, will provide pilgrims with a “visual connect” with the temple.
Key features
  • A seven-metre Green Buffer Zone adjacent to the outer walls, and including a five-metre-high terraced landscape green;
  • A 10-metre inner path around the temple complex for ceremonial procession of deities and to be used by the general public;
  • A 14-metre Landscape Zone with gardens that have local varieties of trees and shrubs;
  • An eight-metre outer path covered by trees on either side to act as a shaded pathway for visitors/pilgrims;
  • A 10-metre Public Convenience Zone with facilities such as restrooms, drinking water fountains, information-cum-donation kiosks, and shelter pavilions for rest;
  • A 4.5-metre service lane for access by service vehicles and maintenance of the corridor;
  • A 4.5-metre-wide dedicated shuttle-cum-emergency lane for any kind of emergency and disaster management;
  • A 7.5-metre mixed traffic lane to aid in movement of vehicles around the heritage corridor and to ensure access to properties abutting the outer access road;
  • A seven-metre-wide shaded footpath with trees adjacent to the mixed traffic lane for smooth pedestrian flow around the corridor and neighbouring areas.
  • This will also be equipped with parking bays for sevaks and temple officials. It will also have provision for waste bins, street furniture, drinking water fountains, etc.
Other ABADHA projects
  • Under the ABADHA initiative, 22 projects have been planned in Puri, including the Parikrama project.
  • Some of the other projects include the Shree Setu, a 1.5-km interchange link connecting the Bada Danda (the Grand Road) with the national highway; a new link road connecting Puri bypass to Jagannath Ballav Pilgrim Centre aimed at decongesting roads in Puri town; and a multi-modal hub at Jagannath Ballav Pilgrim Centre with facilities like multi-level parking, commercial space and meditation space.
  • Other projects included the building of multi-level car parking and market complexes. The Odisha government has also planned for the recharge of two ancient water bodies and the development of the Atharanala bridge.
  • The Puri redevelopment project was part of state’s flagship 5T (teamwork, transparency, technology and time leading to transformation) initiative.
  • It was implemented under the direct supervision of the Chief Minister’s Office with V K Pandian, former secretary of the CM and now 5T chairman.
Redevelopment of other temples
  • The Odisha government has approved another Rs 2,000-crore plan for the development of other major temples in the state.
  • This includes the makeover of 66 acres around the 11th century Lingaraj Temple in Bhubaneswar, with a financial outlay of Rs 700 crore.
  • A dozen other temples will also get a facelift, including the Samaleswari Temple in Sambalpur, the Sun Temple in Konark, Chandi Mandir in Cuttack, Nilamadhab Temple in Kantilo, Nrusinghanath Temple in Bargarh, Harishankar Temple in Balangir, Sarala Temple in Jagatsinghpur, Alarnath Temple in Brahmagiri and Aradi Dham in Bhadrak.
