Successful Test Firing of BrahMos

In news

India successfully test-fired anti-ship version of BrahMos supersonic cruise missile in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Highlights
  • The launch was first in a series of launches of the various versions of the missile.
  • The missile performed highly complex manoeuvres and hit bull’s eye of the target.
  • The versions of the BrahMos that are presently being tested have an extended range of 400 kilometres, as compared to its initial range of 290 kilometres with more versions of higher ranges currently under development.
  • The Indian Navy began inducting BrahMos on its frontline warships from 2005 and has the capability to hit sea-based targets beyond its radar horizon.
BrahMos: A big boost to Make in India programme
  • Jointly developed by Russia and India, successful integration of BrahMos with air, land and sea platforms is also being viewed as a major leap towards indigenisation.
  • A joint venture company set up by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Mashinostroyenia of Russia design it.
  • The first test launch of the initial version BrahMos took place in 2001
  • This assumes importance on the backdrop of government's repeated emphasis on its flagship Make in India scheme and the more recent call for an 'Aatmanirbhar' Bharat.
Significance
  • Over the past few months, India has conducted a series of tests across land, air and sea.
  • The tests may be viewed against the ongoing Chinese aggression along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern Ladakh where the Indian and Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) troops have been locked in a bitter standoff.
  • Chinese expansionist designs are also evident in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR) and Pacific, where Beijing has been violating globally accepted maritime laws and exerting territorial claims.
