Super Typhoon Goni, world’s most powerful storm in four years, smashes into the Philippines.

Highlights

  • Storm surges hit some coastal towns, while rivers overflowed and dikes were destroyed, submerging several villages 
  • Goni has evoked memories of Typhoon Haiyan in November 2013, which left more than 7,300 people dead and missing, flattened entire villages, swept ships inland and displaced more than five million in the central Philippines.

A typhoon is a mature tropical cyclone that develops between 180° and 100°E in the Northern Hemisphere. This region is referred to as the Northwestern Pacific Basin,[1] and is the most active tropical cyclone basin on Earth, accounting for almost one-third of the world's annual tropical cyclones.
