US anti dumping tax on India

The US Department of Commerce is preparing to tax aluminum sheet exporters from 18 countries including India

Findings of the investigation
  • The investigation, launched under Donald Trump's administration, had been requested by nearly a dozen US aluminum alloy manufacturers.
  • US administration determined that imports from Germany in particular ($287 million in 2019) benefited from dumping ranging from 40 to 242 percent.
  • Imports from India ($123 million in 2019) have benefited from subsidies for 35 to 89 percent, according to the US investigation.
Anti-Dumping Duty
  • Anti-dumping duty is a tariff imposed on imports manufactured in foreign countries that are priced below the fair market value of similar goods in the domestic market.
  • The government imposes anti-dumping duty on foreign imports when it believes that the goods are being “dumped” – through the low pricing – in the domestic market.
  • Anti-dumping duty is imposed to protect local businesses and markets from unfair competition by foreign imports.
