Vedh Project
  • As part of a pilot project, Ashramshalas, residential schools under the Tribal Development Project Office, are experimenting with a unique way of learning in Maharashtra’s Nandurbar taluka.
  • Here, teachers are facilitators who, rather than a fixed pattern of facing the class and conducting lessons, set challenges for students and, in the form of group activities, develop their own innovative ways of learning their curriculum.
  • The pilot, called the ‘Vedh Project’, is based on the new concept of heutagogy, a student-centred instructional strategy.
  • Launched last year for Class 5 students in all 60 residential schools in the tribal district, educators say the project has helped bridge the gap in learning outcomes after the pandemic kept children out of school for two years.
  • The Tribal Development Project Office in Nandurbar has now decided to expand the project to cover classes 2 to 7.
Need of the project
  • Along with the pandemic, general procrastination had contributed to poor Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) among students.
  • 5th graders did not know how to solve division sums, or read complete sentences, which are part of the expected learning outcomes at that level.
