Premature birth is an issue all over the world, but the factors that play into it vary from country to country. Premature birth is a birth that takes place more than three weeks before the baby's estimated due date.

World Prematurity Day is observed every year on November 17 to raise awareness of the challenges of preterm birth. Babies who are born before the 37th week of gestation are called premature babies or preemies.

To give preemies equal survival chances worldwide without avoidable long-term complications.

History
The first international awareness day for preterm birth on November 17 was created by European parent organizations in 2008. However, it has been celebrated as World Prematurity Day since 2011. Since then the day has evolved into a worldwide annual observance.
