World Space Week 2022 celebrates 'space and sustainability' this year

In News 
  • The ‘World Space Week’ is celebrated every year between October 4 and October 10 to commemorate the launch of Sputnik-1 - earth’s first artificial satellite - on October 4, 1957 as well as to observe the signing of the historical treaty for "peaceful use of outer space", 10 years later on October 10, 1967.
World Space Week 
  • World Space Week is observed to create awareness about space activities, inspire next generation to contribute to those activities and promote international cooperation in space outreach and education.
  • “Space and Sustainability” is the theme for this year’s World Space Week.
  • Its aim is to achieve sustainability in and from space.
  • It focuses on how sustainability in space relates to how humanity uses space, especially the orbital area around the Earth.
  • Space explorations and remote Earth observations play a major role in assessing climate change, identification of pollution on land and sea and supporting agricultural activities.
  • Of the 169 targets under the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), 65 of them are directly achieved through Earth observation satellites and related technologies.
Background 
  • World Space Week was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on December 6, 1999 to commemorate the contributions of space science and technology towards human development. It is the largest space sector-related event in the world.
  • It is coordinated by the UN in collaboration with the World Space Week Association (WSWA) to provide a unique outreach and education in space sector.
  • The week commemorates the launch of first manmade Earth satellite, Sputnik-1 on October 4, 1957 and the signing of the Outer Space Treaty on October 10, 1967.
