World's Highest Fighter Airfield In Ladakh's Nyoma

  • The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) will construct the world's highest fighter airfield in Nyoma, a village in Ladakh.
About Fighter Airfield
  • The Nyoma village is located close to the south Bank of Pangong Tso at an altitude of about 13,700 feet. Nyoma is around 46 kilometres from the Line of Actual Control with China.
  • The construction of a fighter airfield in Ladakh is strategically significant as it enhances India’s defense capabilities and infrastructure in the border region, contributing to improved connectivity and security.
  • The budget for border infrastructure development has increased significantly in recent years.
  • In 2008, it was approximately Rs 3,000 crore, increasing to Rs 5,000-6,000 crore in 2017, Rs 8,000 crore in 2019, and around Rs 12,340 crore in the last year.
  • Of the dedicated amount of ₹ 2,900 crores, Nyoma Airfield will be developed at a cost of approximately ₹ 200 crore.
  • Nyoma is notably home to an Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) established in 1962.
  • Nyoma’s elevation reaches an impressive 4,180 meters (13,710 feet) above sea level, making it one of the highest-altitude locations in the region.
