Assam electric fences causes casualties

In news

Data shared by the Assam Forest Department show that the state saw 113 elephant deaths due to electrocution between 2009 and September 25, 2020, with several more casualties

Issue
  • Nearly 90 elephants have died of electrocution in Assam since 2011, according to the state’s forest department figures.
  • The major reason for these deaths, are illegal electric fences and ill-maintained sagging power lines.
  • People living in areas frequented by wild elephants have been setting up electric fences to protect their farms and property.
  • But instead of using low-intensity direct current in these fences as is the norm, people often end up drawing current from high-powered domestic lines.
Solution
  • The APDCL can  try insulating wires at vulnerable locations, check sagging wires. Or, for that matter, look into the theft of power from domestic lines.
  • Installing hanging solar-powered fences in places like Orang (National Park), Manas & Laokhowa.
  • These are visible from a distance, and are more effective in keeping the elephants away.
  • Mobile Anti Depredation Squads, armed with pump action guns and rubber bullets.
