GoI appoints Sangeeta Verma as acting chairperson of CCI

  • The government recently appointed Sangeeta Verma as the acting chairperson of the Competition Commission of India (CCI).
About Sangeeta Verma 
  • Dr Sangeeta Verma, a 1981 batch of the Indian Economic Service (IES), is currently a member of the regulator (CCI). She joined the CCI as a member on 24th December 2018.
  • She has thorough experience over 3 decades in Government (Central & State), as an economist, administrator, regulator, and policymaker. She has served the government in several sectors of the economy, including consumer affairs, industry, agriculture, power, and women and child development.
  • She has served as Secretary of the U. P. State Electricity Regulatory Commission (UPERC), and Economic Adviser with the Central Electricity Authority, Ministry of Power (MoP). She has also served as the Principal Adviser in the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (now the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade – DPIIT).
  • Sangeeta Verma also served as a Member of the Appellate Authority for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction, which settled on appeals against orders of the former Board for Industrial Financial Reconstruction (BIFR).
About CCI
  • Competition Commission of India (CCI) is a statutory body of the Government of India responsible for enforcing the Competition Act, 2002, it was duly constituted in March 2009.
  • The Monopolies and Restrictive Trade Practices Act, 1969 (MRTP Act) was repealed and replaced by the Competition Act, 2002, on the recommendations of the Raghavan committee.
  • The Commission consists of one Chairperson and six Members who shall be appointed by the Central Government.
  • The commission is a quasi-judicial body which gives opinions to statutory authorities and also deals with other cases. The Chairperson and other Members shall be whole-time Members.
